1. Multiplying by 5

Instead of doing the multiplication directly, try this trick: Divide the number by 2, then multiply by 10. For example, 48 × 5 becomes (48 ÷ 2) × 10 = 24 × 10 = 240.

2. Squaring Numbers Ending in 5

To square a number ending in 5 (like 25, 35, etc.), multiply the first digit by itself plus one, then append 25. For 35²: 3 × (3+1) = 12, so 35² = 1225.

3. Percentage Calculations

Finding 10% is easy - just move the decimal one place left. To find 20%, calculate 10% and double it. For 5%, calculate 10% and halve it.

4. Multiplying by 11

For two-digit numbers, separate the digits, add them, and put the sum in the middle. 72 × 11: 7 (7+2) 2 = 792. If the sum is 10 or more, carry the 1.

5. Adding Large Numbers

Round numbers up to make them easier to add, then subtract the difference. For 398 + 237: (400 + 240) - (2 + 3) = 640 - 5 = 635.
